Tell a Friend

Stacy Schoolfield

A seventh generation Texas, I come from a family of farmers, teachers and storytellers. Being so grounded, I yearned to travel, to go beyond the borders of the state, big in myth as well as physical size. I spent my allowance on movies and when that wasn't enough, made up stories of my own. I grew up, went to college, and spent a year as an exchange student where I traveled as far as the European trains would take me during every school break. Despite dreams of more travel, I finished school (B.A. in English and radio/TV/film, minor in drama) and began a different adventure: parenthood. Parenthood requiring income, I forged careers in technical and book publishing, as a writer, editor, photographer, videographer producer and software project manager. In between work, I made movies. Documentaries allow me to be an avid observer while I tell a story. That's when I feel once again like a traveler, as though I'm seeing something rare and learning a story that needs to be told again, respectfully. I produced jumping off bridges, taking the film from development through distribution. The film has screened at festivals, and nonprofit organizations across the country and is now finding a solid home in education. I've made one feature documentary, Rescue Me, about people who rescue dogs from shelters and a short documentary, Barney about a retired plumber turned artist with an unusual canvas. I also finished a pilot for Roadside USA, a project that lets me travel around and take a lot of pictures, two of my favorite things to do.
