Bryan Single
Director Bryan Single was born and raised in the American South and later studied at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. His work as a documentary filmmaker began in 2002 in Spain with “Shadows of the Sun”, a poetic film that illuminates the intertwined experiences of a matador and bull over the course of a lifetime. The film has been congratulated by both afficionado’s and critics alike for, among other views, its “remarkable visual grace,” its “contribution to media arts and cultural history,” and its “expression of duende”, or soulful Andalucían spirit.
Mr. Single’s second film “Children Of War” was completed in 2009 and has been a recipient of numerous, international awards, including the prestigious Cinema For Peace Award for Justice. It is one of only a handful of films to screen before world leaders in the historic, General Assembly Hall of the United Nations. The film has also been recognized as a powerful, communication tool on the subjects of child combatants, conflict resolution, and international law, and has been presented before decision-makers in the European Parliament, the International Criminal Court, and in UN and EU branches around the world.
Bryan also enjoys working as a documentary cinematographer. Some of his award-winning collaborations include the 2009 Sundance Film Festival hit “Big River Man”, which tells the fantastic story of an eccentric, 52 year old environmentalist as he swims the entire length of the Amazon River; “God In America”, the six-part Frontline television series that examines the history and diversity of religious belief in the United States; and “Students of Consequence”, a multi-media educational project on wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability, sponsored by the Jane Goodall Institute and the George Lucas Foundation.
Mr. Single’s work has been distributed in cinema’s, libraries, and in political, cultural, and educational institutions worldwide, and has also appeared on the Discovery Channel, PBS, and the BBC.
